Welcome to my little corner of the internet. I’m really glad you’re here.
If you’ve stumbled upon this page, chances are you’re either a fellow traveler, someone dreaming about their next trip, or maybe you’re just curious about what this blog is all about. Whatever brought you here, grab a coffee (or tea, no judgment), get comfortable, and let me share my story with you.
So, 2018. That’s when I caught the travel bug, and honestly, I went all in like most people do. I was running from one tourist spot to another, ticking off places like items on a grocery list. Every famous monument, every Instagram-worthy location, every “must-see” spot that travel guides told me I couldn’t miss.
I was obsessed with the numbers. “I’ve been to 15 cities!” “I’ve visited 8 countries!” It felt like an achievement, you know? Like I was winning at something. I’d rush through places, snap the photos, grab the videos, and move on to the next destination. Classic tourist mode.
But here’s the thing – I was exhausted. Not just physically, but mentally too. And my wallet? Let’s just say it wasn’t too happy with me either. I was traveling, sure, but was I actually there? Spoiler alert: I wasn’t.
Somewhere along the way, I had this realization that hit me hard.
I couldn’t remember the smell of the coffee in that café I rushed through. I couldn’t recall the conversation I might have had with a local if I wasn’t so busy finding the perfect angle for my shot. I had been to all these places, but I hadn’t actually *lived* in any of them.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve been to 100 countries if you didn’t truly be present in even one of them.
And here’s another thing I realized – I was spending so much money trying to tick off these tourist spots. Expensive tours, overpriced restaurants near landmarks, accommodation in touristy areas. I was burning through my savings for experiences that weren’t even making me happy.
That’s when everything changed for me. I realized I was chasing something that didn’t make me happy. I was traveling for the checklist, for the photos, for the validation. But not for me. Not for my peace. Not for my soul.
So I stopped running. I slowed down. Way down. And I started traveling smarter, not harder.

These days, I travel solo, I travel slowly, and I travel on a budget. And honestly? It’s been the best decision I’ve ever made.
I’d rather spend time in 3 places a year than rush through 12. I don’t plan everything down to the last detail anymore. I choose a place, I go there, and I let it unfold. If I love the vibe, I stay for weeks, sometimes months. If it feels too touristy or just doesn’t speak to me, I pack my backpack and I’m already on the next bus or train to somewhere new.
I’ve fallen in love with offbeat places. The ones that don’t make it to the top 10 lists. The ones where you won’t find crowds of people trying to get the same Instagram shot. And here’s the beautiful part – these places are almost always cheaper too.
I’d rather be sitting in a remote village in the North Vietnam mountains, sipping coffee that costs less than a dollar and watching life happen around me, than standing on a crowded bridge with a hundred other people waiting for their turn to take the exact same photo. (And yes, I’ve done both. Trust me, the coffee wins every time.)
Budget travel has taught me so much. It’s taught me that the best experiences don’t come with a hefty price tag. That staying in a local guesthouse and chatting with the owner is far more rewarding than a fancy hotel room. That eating street food and sitting on plastic stools gives you more stories than any expensive restaurant ever could.
When you travel on a budget, you’re forced to interact with locals, to take local transport, to eat where locals eat. And that’s where the real magic happens. That’s where you find the unmapped Asia.
Now, let me be clear about something – I love clicking photos and videos. I’m not against it at all. Memories are precious, and I want to capture them. But I know too many people who travel *only* for the photos and videos. Their entire trip revolves around getting content. They’ll spend 20 minutes getting the perfect shot and 20 seconds actually experiencing the place. That’s not traveling, that’s… well, I don’t know what that is, but it’s definitely not traveling.
My approach? Click some photos, shoot some videos, and then put the gear away. Just sit there. Breathe. Look around. Feel the wind. Listen to the sounds. Enjoy what this incredible earth has to offer. The trip isn’t about the content you create – it’s about the moments you experience.
You’re probably wondering – why “Unmapped Asia”?
Well, the name says it all, really. Asia is this incredible, massive continent with so much diversity, culture, and beauty. But when most people think of traveling to Asia, they think of the same places – the ones that are already on everyone’s map. The ones plastered all over Instagram. The ones in every travel guide.
Don’t get me wrong, those places became popular for a reason. But there’s so much more to Asia than what’s already been mapped out and packaged for tourists.
I wanted to explore the unmapped parts. The villages that don’t show up in your search results. The trails that aren’t marked on Google Maps. The cafés where locals hang out, not where tour buses stop. The experiences that you can’t book online. And the best part? Most of these places are incredibly affordable.
“Unmapped Asia” is about finding those hidden corners, those quiet moments, those authentic experiences that make you feel like you’ve discovered something truly special. It’s about going beyond the surface and diving into the real Asia – the one that exists off the beaten path. The one that doesn’t require you to empty your bank account to experience.
Through this blog, I want to take you to places you might not have heard of. I want to show you that you don’t need to follow the crowd to have an incredible journey. And I want to prove to you that you don’t need a fat wallet to travel meaningfully. Sometimes the best experiences are the ones that aren’t in the guidebook and don’t cost a fortune.
So yeah, that’s why Unmapped Asia. Because the best stories aren’t always found on the map, and they definitely don’t always come with a big price tag.
So here’s a question I want to ask you, and I want you to really think about it:
Why do you travel?
For me, the answer is simple now. I travel for peace. I travel for happiness. I travel to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with myself. I travel to meet people whose lives are completely different from mine. I travel to sit in silence on a mountain and realize how small my problems really are.
I don’t travel for Instagram likes. I don’t travel to boost my city count. I don’t travel to prove anything to anyone. And I definitely don’t travel to show off how much money I can spend.
I travel because it makes me feel alive.
But here’s the thing – your answer doesn’t have to be the same as mine. Maybe you travel for adventure. Maybe you travel to challenge yourself. Maybe you travel to eat incredible food or to find inspiration or to heal from something. Maybe you travel because it’s the only time you feel truly free.
Whatever your reason is, I want you to ask yourself: Is the way you’re traveling actually serving that reason? Or are you, like I was, caught up in what you think travel is supposed to look like?
I’d genuinely love to hear your answer. What drives you to pack your bags and explore this world? Send me a DM on Instagram and share your story with me. Let’s have a real conversation about it.
Through this blog, I want to share my journeys with you – not just the places I go, but the feelings, the lessons, the quiet moments that don’t always make it into a highlight reel. I want to show you that incredible travel experiences don’t require deep pockets, just an open mind and a willingness to step off the beaten path.
I want to inspire you to slow down. To stop chasing numbers and start chasing experiences. To find your own version of peace, wherever that may be. And to realize that some of the most meaningful adventures are also the most affordable ones.
If this resonates with you, come follow my journey on Instagram [@unmappedasia]. I share photos, reels, and stories from the road – the real, unfiltered kind. The kind that shows you what it actually feels like to travel this way. Budget tips, hidden gems, solo travel insights, and everything in between.
Let’s explore this beautiful world together, but let’s do it slowly, meaningfully, and affordably.
See you out there,
Vishal
