Welcome to my little corner of the internet. Glad you’re here.
If you’ve stumbled on this page, you’re probably a traveler, someone planning a trip, or you’re just bored and clicking around. Whatever brought you here, grab a coffee (or tea, I don’t judge), and let me tell you how this whole thing started.
2018. That’s When I Lost My Mind.
I caught the travel bug. And like most people, I went all in. I was running from one tourist spot to another, ticking off places like I was shopping for groceries. Every famous monument. Every Instagram location. Every “must-see” spot the internet told me I couldn’t miss.
I was obsessed with numbers. “I’ve been to 15 cities!” “I’ve visited 8 countries!” It felt like winning. Like I was achieving something. Rush through a place. Snap photos. Grab videos. Move on. Classic tourist stuff.
But I was exhausted. Physically. Mentally. And my wallet? Let’s just say it was sending me angry texts. I was traveling, sure. But was I actually there?
Spoiler: I wasn’t.
Somewhere along the way it hit me.
I couldn’t remember the smell of the coffee in that café I rushed through. Couldn’t recall any conversation with a local because I was too busy finding the perfect angle. I’d been to all these places but I hadn’t lived in any of them.
Doesn’t matter if you’ve been to 100 countries if you weren’t present in even one.
And another thing. I was spending so much money on this. Expensive tours. Overpriced restaurants near landmarks. Hotels in touristy areas. Burning through savings for experiences that weren’t even making me happy.
That’s when it changed. I realized I was chasing something that didn’t make me happy. Traveling for the checklist. For the photos. For validation. Not for me. Not for peace. Not for my soul.
So I stopped running. Slowed down. Way down. Started traveling smarter, not harder.

These days I travel solo. Slowly. On a budget. Best decision I’ve made.
I’d rather spend time in 3 places a year than rush through 12. Don’t plan everything anymore. Choose a place. Go there. Let it unfold. If I love the vibe, I stay weeks. Sometimes months. If it feels too touristy or doesn’t speak to me, I’m on the next bus.
I’ve fallen for offbeat places. The ones that don’t make top 10 lists. Where you won’t find crowds fighting for the same photo. And here’s the beautiful part: these places are almost always cheaper.
I’d rather sit in a remote village in North Vietnam, drinking coffee that costs less than a dollar, watching life happen, than stand on a crowded bridge with a hundred people waiting for their turn to take the exact same photo. And yes, I’ve done both. The coffee wins every time.
Budget travel taught me a lot. The best experiences don’t come with a price tag. Staying in a local guesthouse and chatting with the owner beats a fancy hotel. Eating street food on plastic stools gives you more stories than any expensive restaurant.
When you travel on a budget you’re forced to interact with locals. Take local transport. Eat where locals eat. That’s where the magic happens. That’s where you find the unmapped Asia.
Now let me be clear. I love clicking photos and videos. Memories are precious. I want to capture them. But I know too many people who travel only for content. Their entire trip revolves around getting the shot. They’ll spend 20 minutes getting the perfect angle and 20 seconds experiencing the place.
That’s not traveling. That’s… I don’t know what that is. But it’s not traveling.
My approach? Click some photos. Shoot some videos. Then put the gear away. Sit. Breathe. Look around. Feel the wind. Listen. Enjoy what this earth has to offer. The trip isn’t about the content. It’s about the moments.
You’re probably wondering. Why “Unmapped Asia”?
The name says it all. Asia is this incredible massive continent with so much diversity and culture and beauty. But when most people think of traveling here, they think of the same places. The ones already on everyone’s map. Plastered all over Instagram. In every guide.
Don’t get me wrong. Those places became popular for a reason. But there’s so much more to Asia than what’s been mapped out and packaged for tourists.
I wanted to explore the unmapped parts. Villages that don’t show up in search results. Trails not marked on Google Maps. Cafés where locals hang out, not where tour buses stop. Experiences you can’t book online. And best part? Most of these places are incredibly affordable.
“Unmapped Asia” is about finding those hidden corners. Those quiet moments. Those authentic experiences that make you feel like you discovered something special. Going beyond the surface and diving into the real Asia. The one off the beaten path. The one that doesn’t require emptying your bank account.
Through this blog I want to take you to places you might not have heard of. Show you that you don’t need to follow the crowd to have an incredible journey. Prove that you don’t need a fat wallet to travel meaningfully. Sometimes the best experiences aren’t in the guidebook and don’t cost a fortune.
So yeah. That’s why Unmapped Asia. Because the best stories aren’t always on the map. And they definitely don’t always come with a big price tag.
Here’s a question. Really think about it.
Why do you travel?
For me the answer is simple now. I travel for peace. For happiness. To disconnect from noise and reconnect with myself. To meet people whose lives are completely different from mine. To sit in silence on a mountain and realize how small my problems really are.
My favorite thing nowadays is to talk to someone who doesn’t understand my language and I don’t understand theirs. We just communicate using google Translate and that gives me the absolute high.
I don’t travel for Instagram likes. Don’t travel to boost my city count. Don’t travel to prove anything to anyone. And definitely don’t travel to show off how much money I can spend.
I travel because it makes me feel alive.
But your answer doesn’t have to be the same as mine. Maybe you travel for adventure. To challenge yourself. To eat incredible food or find inspiration or heal from something. Maybe you travel because it’s the only time you feel truly free.
Whatever your reason is, ask yourself: Is the way you’re traveling actually serving that reason? Or are you, like I was, caught up in what you think travel is supposed to look like?
I’d genuinely love to hear your answer. What drives you to pack your bags? Send me a DM on Instagram. Let’s have a real conversation about it.
Through this blog I want to share my journeys with you. Not just the places. The feelings. The lessons. The quiet moments that don’t make it into a highlight reel. I want to show you that incredible travel doesn’t require deep pockets. Just an open mind and willingness to step off the beaten path.
I want to inspire you to slow down. Stop chasing numbers. Start chasing experiences. Find your own version of peace wherever that may be. Realize that some of the most meaningful adventures are also the most affordable.
If this resonates with you, come follow my journey on Instagram [@unmappedasia]. I share photos, reels, stories from the road. The real unfiltered kind. What it actually feels like to travel this way. Budget tips. Hidden gems. Solo travel insights. Everything in between.
Let’s explore this beautiful world together. But let’s do it slowly. Meaningfully. Affordably.
See you out there,
Vishal
