Yogyakarta to Jakarta is one of the most common journeys on Java, and you have four realistic ways to do it: train, intercity bus, flight, or a shared shuttle van (what Indonesians call travel). Trains are the practical overland option, buses are the budget-friendly alternative, and flights cut the time you spend getting there.
Which one is right depends on your budget, how much time you have, how much comfort you want, your luggage, and where you need to leave from and arrive. None of them is the best for everyone.
I took the bus on this route, so I’ll tell you what that was like, including a rule at the dinner buffet that surprised me. For the other options I’ve used current listings and guides. Prices are in IDR and indicative, not guaranteed fares.

Yogyakarta to Jakarta: A Quick Transport Comparison
Here’s the overview before the detail. Treat every figure as a planning estimate and check live listings for your date.
| Transport | Approximate travel time | Approximate cost (IDR, per person, one way) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train | About 6 hours on faster services such as the Taksaka. Roughly 6.5–7.5 hours on economy services | Economy listings: about 74,000–280,000. Faster services: one route-site estimate of roughly 305,000–380,000 (service and class not named). These are separate estimates for different services, not like-for-like fares | Comfort and overland travel |
| Bus | Often 10.5–14.5 hours, averaging about 11.5–12 hours on one platform | Roughly 165,000–425,000 depending on operator and class. I paid 275,000 with dinner included | Budget travelers |
| Flight | About 1 hour 15–25 minutes in the air, plus airport time | Ticket only: roughly 700,000–2.0 million, with most listings around 850,000–1.5 million. Airport transfers and baggage are extra | Saving travel time |
| Shared shuttle | Depends on the operator and traffic. One platform says 10–15 hours | One platform lists about 275,000–350,000 | Travelers who prefer a smaller shared vehicle |
Yogyakarta to Jakarta travel time for the train, bus and shuttle runs station-to-station or terminal-to-terminal, while flight time is only the time in the air. And don’t compare ticket prices alone: a cheap ticket can cost more once you add rides to a distant terminal or airport.
Traveling from Yogyakarta to Jakarta by Train

The Yogyakarta to Jakarta train is a good fit if you want a comfortable overland journey without sitting in road traffic the whole way. Several services run the route, and they differ in speed, class, stations and fare, so it’s worth comparing the departures for your date.
I took the bus, not the train, so this section is based on listings and guides rather than my own trip.
Train Fares and Journey Times
| Estimate | Service and class | Stations | Approx. time | Fare (IDR, per person) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Booking listing, sample day 4 July 2026 | Bengawan, economy | Wates to Jatinegara or Pasar Senen | About 7 h 4 min to 7 h 16 min | 74,000 |
| Booking listing, same sample day | Jaka Tingkir, economy | Lempuyangan or Wates to Pasar Senen or Jatinegara | About 6 h 36 min to 7 h 15 min | 280,000 |
| Route-site estimate (USD 17–21) | Service and class not named | Yogyakarta Tugu to Jatinegara | About 6 hours | Roughly 305,000–380,000 |
| Taksaka (guide) | Executive and luxury | Yogyakarta to Gambir | Average about 6 h 8 min | Fare not verified. Check live |
What this tells you:
- Economy services in the listing take roughly 6.5–7.5 hours and are quoted from about IDR 74,000 to 280,000. The economy services in that sample depart just after midnight and arrive in the early morning.
- Faster services such as the Taksaka take about 6 hours. I couldn’t verify a Taksaka fare, and the route-site estimate doesn’t say which service or class it covers.
- Fares change with the date, class and availability, and the sources don’t always agree with each other. Check the exact service, station pair and date before you decide.
Which Train Should You Choose?
The main choice is between economy and a higher class, and between faster and slower services.
- Economy: the cheapest, but slower, and the services in the sample leave at awkward hours.
- Executive: more comfortable seating. On the Taksaka it’s a 2-2 layout.
- Luxury: a higher-comfort option on the Taksaka, with a 1-2 layout and seats that recline up to 140°.
- Onboard facilities: the Taksaka is listed with an onboard café and trolley service, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and USB charging. Other services may differ.
If you’re traveling a long way, carrying luggage, or want to arrive rested, a higher class can be worth it. If the schedule works and price is your priority, economy can be enough. Don’t assume every train has the same facilities or journey time.
Yogyakarta and Jakarta Train Stations
Departure and arrival stations depend on the service, and not every train leaves from Tugu or arrives at Gambir.
- Yogyakarta: Yogyakarta Station (Tugu) is the main station. Some services leave from Lempuyangan instead, and some listings show departures from Wates.
- Jakarta: the Taksaka goes to Gambir Station. The economy services in the listing arrive at Pasar Senen or Jatinegara.
The arrival station matters more than it looks, because Jakarta is huge. A cheaper ticket that ends far from your accommodation can cost you the saving back in time and rides. Give yourself time to reach the departure station, arrive early enough to board, and check which arrival station is closest to where you’re staying.
How to Book Train Tickets
- Use the official Access by KAI app, or a reputable online booking platform.
- Compare departures and classes for your date.
- Book ahead during busy travel periods, since fares and seat availability change.
- Keep your booking confirmation and identification details handy.
Traveling from Yogyakarta to Jakarta by Bus
The Yogyakarta to Jakarta bus is an alternative for travelers who want to compare prices and departure points. It’s much slower than the train or a flight, but it can be good value, and it may suit you if your accommodation is closer to a bus pickup point than to a railway station.
What to expect:
- Journey time: often around 10.5 to 14.5 hours depending on operator and traffic. One platform averages about 11.5 to 12 hours. Heavy traffic can add a lot.
- Day and overnight departures: schedules vary by operator.
- Bus classes: from basic to more comfortable executive-style services, with differences in seat layout, legroom, reclining and air conditioning.
- Luggage: arrangements differ by operator.
- Rest stops: most long-distance buses stop on the way, sometimes at a place with a meal.
- Ticket prices: roughly IDR 165,000–425,000 on one platform, with fares from about IDR 225,000 on another.
My own experience:
I took the bus on this route with an operator called Semeru Trans. My fare was IDR 275,000, and that included one dinner on the way.
Partway through the journey the bus stopped at a rest stop, and everyone got off to eat in the dining area. It was a buffet, and it came with one rule I wasn’t expecting. There were several kinds of chicken, like chicken in gravy, fried chicken and grilled chicken, and you were only allowed to take one of those chicken dishes. Rice, noodles and everything else had no limit. Only the chicken was capped.
It’s a small detail, but it’s the kind of thing you only learn by doing the trip. It also means the fare can be better value than the ticket price suggests, because dinner is covered. Inclusions differ by operator and class, so check what your own ticket covers.
That’s one operator on one trip. Check current schedules, facilities and drop-off points before you book, and don’t treat my experience as a recommendation of any operator.
Where Do Buses Depart From and Arrive in Jakarta?
Operators use different boarding and arrival points, so don’t assume every bus leaves from Giwangan Terminal or arrives at the same Jakarta terminal.
- Yogyakarta: boarding points listed by platforms include Giwangan, Jombor, Wates, Sleman and other operator pickup points.
- Jakarta: drop-off points listed include Kampung Rambutan, Lebak Bulus, Kalideres, Pulo Gebang, Tanjung Priok, Pondok Pinang, Pasar Rebo, Grogol and Cibubur. Pulo Gebang, in East Jakarta, is the terminal that typically serves buses to and from Central and East Java.
Where the bus drops you decides how far you still have to go, so work out the ride from the arrival terminal to your accommodation before you book.
Which Bus Should You Choose?
Standard and higher-comfort services differ in seat layout, legroom, reclining seats, air conditioning, onboard facilities, journey time and price.
A cheaper ticket isn’t always the better deal. If a bus takes much longer, or drops you far from where you’re staying, the savings can disappear. Compare operators for your date rather than relying on one name.
How to Book Bus Tickets
- Use an online bus-booking platform such as Traveloka, 12GO.asia or redBus, or book directly with the operator where possible.
- Compare fares and departure times.
- Check the departure terminal, the Jakarta drop-off point and the baggage conditions before you pay.
Traveling from Yogyakarta to Jakarta by Plane
Flying is the quickest option in terms of time on the move. The Yogyakarta to Jakarta flight is short, but you need to count the trip to the airport, check-in, security, boarding and the ride from the airport after you land.
- Airport: Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) is the airport to consider.
- Direct flights: one route site, updated 16 October 2026, lists nonstop flights from YIA to Jakarta’s Soekarno–Hatta Airport (CGK), around 19 a day on average, with the fastest listed at about 1 hour 25 minutes. Other sites quote about 1 hour 15 to 20 minutes.
- Airlines: the same site lists nine airlines on the route, including Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, Batik Air, Lion Air, Super Air Jet, Sriwijaya Air, NAM Air, Pelita Air and TransNusa.
Routes, airlines and schedules change, so don’t count on a particular flight being available. Check the exact date you want.
What Does a Flight Really Cost?
There are two separate costs here, and it’s easy to mix them up.
1. The flight ticket itself. These are one-way fares per person.
- Cheapest fares spotted: about USD 37–41, roughly IDR 670,000–740,000.
- Typical ranges: most listings fall around USD 48–81, roughly IDR 865,000–1.46 million. One site’s range ran higher, up to about USD 110 (roughly IDR 1.98 million).
- A realistic planning range for the ticket: about IDR 700,000 to 2.0 million, with most fares around IDR 850,000 to 1.5 million.
Fares vary by date, airline and how far ahead you book, and the sites don’t agree exactly, so check live fares for your date. Don’t assume a flight is the cheapest option either. Compare real ticket prices against the train and bus.
2. Getting to and from the airport, which is extra. These options from YIA into the city:
- Airport train to Tugu Station: about 35–40 minutes, around IDR 20,000 for the regular service or IDR 55,000 for the express
- Bus: about 1.5–2 hours, around IDR 80,000
- Taxi: from around IDR 250,000, taking at least 1.5 hours
On the Jakarta side, the ride from the airport to your accommodation also adds to the total, and it depends on where in the city you’re going. Baggage fees can add to the ticket price too.
Which Airports Do You Use?
For Yogyakarta, YIA is the airport to look for. Some older route listings still show the former Adisutjipto Airport (JOG), but current flights are from YIA, so don’t mix the two up.
In Jakarta, the nonstop flights listed arrive at Soekarno–Hatta (CGK). Jakarta’s other airport, Halim Perdanakusuma (HLP), isn’t shown for this route on the listing I checked, but check whether a suitable service operates on your date, and don’t assume all airlines use the same Jakarta airport. The arrival airport matters because Jakarta is huge, and the better one depends on where you’re going and which flights are available.
How Much Time Should You Allow for the Flight?
The flight is only part of the journey. Add up:
- Getting from central Yogyakarta to YIA: roughly 35–40 minutes by airport train from Tugu, or 1.5 hours or more by bus or taxi
- Airport arrival buffer: follow your airline’s check-in guidance and add a cushion on top
- Check-in and security
- The flight: about 1 hour 15–25 minutes
- Baggage collection
- Travel from the Jakarta airport to your accommodation
One aggregator’s train-plus-flight itinerary comes to about 4 hours in total, before the ride from the Jakarta airport. Compare that with about 6 hours on the Taksaka station to station. Flying can be best if you’re short on time, but compare the full journey, not just the time in the air.
How to Book Flights
- Book through the airline or a reputable booking platform.
- Compare fares and departure times across airlines.
- Check the arrival airport, the baggage allowance and the final fare, including baggage fees, before you pay.
Traveling from Yogyakarta to Jakarta by Shared Shuttle
Shared shuttle vans, commonly called travel in Indonesia, are another option. They’re shared services in smaller vehicles rather than full-size intercity buses.
- Smaller vehicles and shared passengers
- Operator-specific pickup points and designated drop-off points
- Door-to-door service only where the operator explicitly offers it
- Travel time: depends on the operator and traffic. One platform says about 10–15 hours
- Fares: one platform lists around IDR 275,000–350,000. Its listings aren’t consistent, so confirm with the operator
- Luggage: limited by what fits in the vehicle, so check
I didn’t take a shuttle on this route, so this comes from listings only. Check that the operator you choose actually runs Yogyakarta to Jakarta, and whether the service is shared or exclusive.
Is a Shared Shuttle Better Than a Bus or Train?
It depends on what matters to you.
- Price: not automatically cheaper than a bus or train.
- Pickup and drop-off: can be more convenient if the points suit you.
- Journey time: not automatically faster, and traffic affects it just like a bus.
- Luggage and comfort: less luggage space than a big bus, and a smaller vehicle can still be tight on a long journey.
- Flexibility: departure times are set by the operator.
Don’t assume every shuttle includes hotel pickup. Treat the shuttle as a possible fit for some travelers, with the train, bus and plane as the main options.
Which Is the Best Way to Travel from Yogyakarta to Jakarta?
There’s no single answer. Here’s how I’d choose, using the figures above.
Best Option for Budget Travelers
Compare the cheapest economy Yogyakarta to Jakarta train fares with the cheapest bus tickets for your date. The train can come out cheaper, but those services are slow and may leave around midnight. A bus fare can include a meal, as mine did. Add the cost of getting to and from the departure and arrival points before you call either one cheapest.
Best Option for Comfort
An executive or luxury train, a higher-comfort bus service, or a suitable shuttle. The Taksaka’s luxury class, with reclining seats, is the most comfortable option I found listed.
Best Option for Saving Time
Compare the train’s total journey with the Yogyakarta to Jakarta flight’s door-to-door journey. The flight is short, but airport transfers, check-in and waiting eat into the difference. For many people it still comes out ahead, but only once you add the whole trip.
Best Option for an Overland Journey
The Yogyakarta to Jakarta bus and train both let you cross Java by land. The train is faster and generally more comfortable, while the bus is usually slower but often cheaper.
Practical Tips for Traveling from Yogyakarta to Jakarta
Check What Your Ticket Includes
Inclusions vary. My bus fare covered a dinner at a rest-stop buffet, while flights can charge extra for baggage. Compare what you actually get, not just the headline price.
Build Slack into Your Arrival Day
Bus journeys can run long in traffic, and Jakarta is a hard city to cross in a hurry. Avoid tight onward plans or check-in times on the day you arrive.
Book Ahead During Busy Periods
Popular services and cheaper seats can sell out around holidays and weekends.
Check Your Luggage Allowance
Rules differ between trains, bus operators, shuttles and airlines, so confirm before you pack.
Keep Your Booking Details Accessible
Keep your confirmation and other travel details on your phone.
Plan Your Arrival in Jakarta
Jakarta is a big city, and your onward journey depends on where you’re going. Know your next step before you land.
