1. Hanoi to Ninh Binh by Van

The van is the most convenient way to travel from Hanoi to Ninh Binh and the option I personally used and recommend.

Vans are comfortable minivans carrying around 9 to 16 passengers. They pick you up from your hotel or a designated meeting point in central Hanoi. No need to navigate to a bus station or figure out platforms. Just wait at your pickup point and the van comes to you.

The journey takes around 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic leaving Hanoi. The highway south is smooth and well-maintained. Most van services drop you directly at your accommodation or at a central point in Tam Coc, which saves you the hassle of finding extra transport on arrival.

Cost: 130,000 to 180,000 VND ($5.20 to $7.20). I paid 155,000 VND ($6.20) when I booked through Vexere.

Comfort level: Good. Proper van seats. Air conditioning throughout. Clean. Not luxury. But perfectly comfortable for a 2-hour journey.

Best for: Tourists who want convenience, direct drop-off at Tam Coc, and no station navigation.

2. Hanoi to Ninh Binh by Train

The train is a solid option if you enjoy local travel and want to see the Vietnamese countryside from your window.

Hanoi’s main station is Ga Hà Nội, located near the Old Quarter. Trains to Ninh Binh run multiple times daily. The journey takes around 2 to 2.5 hours. Seats range from hard seats to soft seats to air-conditioned coaches. For a 2-hour trip, a soft seat with air conditioning is comfortable enough.

Cost: 60,000 to 150,000 VND ($2.40 to $6) depending on seat class. Cheaper than the van on the base fare.

Pros: Scenic journey through the Vietnamese countryside. Genuine local experience. Reliable fixed schedule.

Cons: Ninh Binh train station sits in the city center, not in Tam Coc. After arriving, you need a Grab or local taxi to reach Tam Coc. That adds another 50,000 to 80,000 VND ($2 to $3.20) and 15 to 20 minutes. You also have to get yourself to Hanoi station from wherever you’re staying.

Best for: Budget travelers who don’t mind extra steps and enjoy the experience of train travel.

3. Hanoi to Ninh Binh by Local Bus

The local bus is the cheapest way to travel from Hanoi to Ninh Binh. Good if budget is your absolute priority.

Local buses depart from Giáp Bát Bus Station in southern Hanoi. The journey to Ninh Binh city takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. Comfort is basic. Seats are fine but there’s no guaranteed air conditioning on all buses. Stops along the way add time.

Cost: 50,000 to 80,000 VND ($2 to $3.20). The cheapest option on this route.

There are also tourist shuttle buses that target backpackers. These cost slightly more, around 100,000 to 150,000 VND ($4 to $6), but offer more comfort and sometimes drop closer to Tam Coc.

The main downside is the same as the train: you arrive in Ninh Binh city, not Tam Coc. You’ll need extra transport at the end.

Best for: Travelers on a very tight budget who don’t mind a longer journey and extra steps on arrival.

4. Private Taxi

The most expensive option. Only makes practical sense if you’re traveling in a group and splitting the cost, or if you have a lot of luggage and need complete flexibility.

Cost: 800,000 to 1,200,000 VND ($32 to $48) for the entire vehicle. Split between 3 or 4 people, this becomes more reasonable.

Travel time: Around 2 hours. The fastest option if you leave before Hanoi’s morning traffic builds.

Best for: Groups of 3 or more, families, or anyone who needs door-to-door service with maximum comfort and no schedule constraints.

How Long Does the Journey Take?

The distance from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is around 90 to 100 kilometers. On paper that sounds short. In reality, traffic exiting Hanoi adds significant time.

Van: 2 to 2.5 hours. Most consistent travel time because vans leave at fixed times and follow the main highway south.

Train: 2 to 2.5 hours on the train itself. Add time for getting to Hanoi station and arranging transport from Ninh Binh station to Tam Coc.

Bus: 2.5 to 3 hours. Local buses make stops and take slightly longer routes. Traffic can push this closer to 3.5 hours during peak times.

Private taxi: Around 2 hours. Fastest option if departing early before Hanoi morning traffic.

One consistent thing across all options: leave in the morning. Hanoi traffic is heaviest between 8 and 10 a.m. Departing around 7 to 8 a.m. means you beat the worst of it and arrive in Ninh Binh by midday with the rest of the day to explore.

Tam Coc vs. Ninh Binh City: Where Should You Get Dropped Off?

The iconic stone bridge leading into Bich Dong Pagoda, a 600-year-old temple complex built directly into the limestone mountains near Tam Coc.

This is one of the most important things to understand before you book any transport from Hanoi to Ninh Binh.

Ninh Binh city is the main urban center. It’s where the train station and main bus terminals are. But it’s not where most travelers actually want to be.

Tam Coc is where the rice fields, limestone karsts, temples, and boat tours are. It’s the area most people picture when they think of Ninh Binh. And it’s about 7 to 10 kilometers from Ninh Binh city.

If you take the train or local bus, you’ll arrive in Ninh Binh city and need extra transport to reach Tam Coc. A Grab ride costs 50,000 to 80,000 VND ($2 to $3.20) and takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

If you take the van, most services drop you directly in Tam Coc or near your accommodation. This is one of the biggest practical advantages of choosing the van when you travel from Hanoi to Ninh Binh.

Pro tip: Many hostels in Tam Coc offer free pickup from Ninh Binh station if you arrive by train or bus. Message your accommodation before you travel. It saves money and removes the arrival headache entirely.

How to Book Hanoi to Ninh Binh Tickets Online

Vexere is the best app for booking transport across Vietnam. I used it throughout my 50-day trip and booked my Hanoi to Ninh Binh van through it. The platform shows all available departure times, lets you compare prices between different operators, and processes payment online. Your booking confirmation arrives instantly. No printing needed. Just show your phone.

12go.asia is another reliable option. Works well for both buses and trains. Good price comparison tool and easy to navigate.

Vietnam Railways website (dsvn.vn) is the official site for train bookings. Slightly less intuitive than Vexere or 12go but works well for direct train reservations.

Your hostel can also book transport for you. Convenient, but often slightly more expensive than booking directly through an app. Fine if you want to skip dealing with platforms.

When to Book Your Hanoi to Ninh Binh Transport

Normal season (March to November): Booking 1 to 2 days in advance is usually fine. Seats are available on most departures. Some flexibility exists even same-day.

Peak season (December to February): Book 3 to 5 days ahead. This is cool season in northern Vietnam. The most popular time to travel. Vans and trains fill up faster.

Tet holiday period (late January to mid-February): Book weeks in advance. Not days. Weeks. This is the single most important transport rule in Vietnam. I got caught out during Tet when every bus and van out of Ninh Binh was fully booked for 8 days. That’s how I ended up staying 11 days instead of 5.

If your trip overlaps with Tet at all, book your Hanoi to Ninh Binh transport the moment you know your dates. Don’t wait.

Essential Travel Tips and Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Assuming train or bus drops you in Tam Coc. It doesn’t. Both arrive in Ninh Binh city. Factor in the extra Grab ride when comparing costs and travel times.

Mistake 2: Booking too late during holidays. Tet and national holidays fill transport weeks in advance. Missing this detail can leave you stranded. Always book early around these periods.

Mistake 3: Underestimating Hanoi traffic. The exit from Hanoi adds 30 to 45 minutes to any journey. A 9 a.m. departure doesn’t mean you’re moving quickly at 9 a.m. Leave earlier than feels necessary.

Mistake 4: Not messaging your hostel about pickup. Many Tam Coc accommodations offer free or cheap pickup from the train or bus station. A quick message before you travel can save you money and stress on arrival.

Tip: Always have your hostel address saved offline. When you arrive in Ninh Binh or Tam Coc, mobile data can be unreliable. Knowing exactly where you’re going without needing internet avoids a frustrating arrival.

Tip: Pack light for the journey. Keep a small daypack accessible at your seat. Put your main bag in the storage area. A 2-hour journey doesn’t need your entire backpack in your lap.

My Personal Experience and Final Recommendation

I took the van from Hanoi to Ninh Binh. Booked through Vexere the day before. Paid 155,000 VND ($6.20). The process took about 3 minutes. I selected my departure time, entered my pickup address in the Hanoi Old Quarter, and received a confirmation instantly.

The van picked me up from near my hostel. No station navigation. No platform confusion. Just waited outside at the pickup time and the van arrived.

Journey took just over 2 hours. Comfortable seats. Air conditioning. Smooth highway. The driver dropped passengers at or near their accommodations in Tam Coc. No extra Grab needed.

For a journey this short, the van was the obvious choice. Door-to-door. No extra transport at either end. And at 155,000 VND, the cost difference from the train was minimal once you factored in getting to and from stations.

My recommendation: Take the van. Book through Vexere. Leave in the morning. Confirm your drop-off is Tam Coc, not Ninh Binh city.

If budget is the absolute priority: take the train. Just plan for the extra Grab from the station to Tam Coc.
